When
you use the classic document library interface, folders
cannot be uploaded or dragged into the library in the same
way as files. If you want to upload a whole folder to a
SharePoint library, you can instead use SharePoint Designer
or
open the library in Windows Explorer. Also files can
be uploaded to SharePoint with these two methods.
The SharePoint Designer method is very stable, so we especially
recommend it if you need to upload many files or folders
to SharePoint. In those cases, it is also suitable for libraries
with the modern interface.
In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer
of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, explains how to add
files and folders to a SharePoint document library using
SharePoint Designer 2013. SharePoint 2010 also supports
import of files and folders. (There is no later version
of SharePoint Designer.)
Before you try this method, please study the
introduction if
you have not already done that. It contains some general
information about SharePoint file upload that you should
be aware of.
This is the process to add files and folders to a SharePoint
library with SharePoint Designer 2013.
Open the SharePoint site (that has the document
library you want to use) in SharePoint Designer.
(Refer
to the SharePoint
Designer demo on how install SharePoint Designer
2013 and how to open a site.)
In SharePoint Designer, go to the library where
you want to add the files or folders.
Click on the 'Import Files' button and then on the
'Add File...'" or "'Add Folder...' button.
Select the files or folder you want to add to the
document library.
Click on Open and then OK, and the upload starts.
Note that all metadata is not kept when you transfer files
to SharePoint this way.
