Install SharePoint Designer 2013

SharePoint Designer iconSharePoint power users should have SharePoint Designer installed. The 2013 version is essential to create workflows and import folders and files.

In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, explains how to find and install SharePoint Designer 2013 and also Service Pack 1, which is a separate file. After that, Peter shows how to open a SharePoint site in SharePoint Designer 2013.

Since the demo was created, Microsoft has changed the download process, so now you can no longer go via the account, as Peter shows in the demo. Instead, you must open the download page directly, as described in the steps below. The last part of the video is still valid.

Install SharePoint Designer 2013

  1. Open Microsoft's download page at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35491.
  2. Select language if you want another language than the default one.
  3. Click on the 'Download' button.
  4. Select the 32- or 64-bit version, depending on your Office version.
  5. Click on 'Download'.
  6. Run the file.
  7. On the same page, click on 'here' to download and install the SharePoint Designer 2013 Service Pack 1

Open a site in SharePoint Designer 2013

  1. In SharePoint Designer, click on Open Site.
  2. Paste or write in the URL to the site you want to open. Note that only the first part of the URL you see when you open the site should be entered.
  3. Click on Open.
