SharePoint Online Navigation
A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström
SharePoint
aministrators need to understand how the SharePoint navigation
is built and can be manipulated.
All SharePoint users need to know that the navigation on
top of the page – called the Top or Global Navigation –
shows links to other sites, while the navigation panel to
the left on the SharePoint page, – called the Quick
Launch or Current Navigation – shows links to content
within the current site.
In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer
of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, explains how the SharePoint
navigation works and can be manipulated.
NOTE: Peter shows a classic Team site in the demo. Modern
Team sites have similar navigation, but Communication sites
only have the Quick Launch and it is placed on top of the
page. In modern sites, the Quick Launch is often called
"Site navigation". Modern sites that are connected to a
hub family, also have a hub navigation in the top left corner.
Peter also shows how to activate the SharePoint Server Publishing
Infrastructure for the site collection. This gives you more
navigation options to choose from, for example to open a
link in a new window.
This is what Peter explains in the demo:
- How the Top Navigation shows subsites that have
the same top navigation as the parent site activated.
- How the navigation links can be manipulated in both
Top Navigation and Quick Launch. You can change their
order or build hierarchies, and you can add and remove
links. This can be done either via the Edit links or
via the Site settings.
- How to activate the SharePoint Server Publishing
Infrastructure to get many more navigation options in
the Site settings.
