3 Ways To Upload A Single File To A SharePoint Library

A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint iconThis is the second tutorial about adding files to SharePoint document libraries. Please study the introduction if you have not already done that. It contains some general information about SharePoint file upload that you should be aware of.

In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, describes three ways to add a single file to a SharePoint document library.

Peter is using Office 365 SharePoint for the demo, but the processes are similar in SharePoint 2016, 2013 and 2010.

Methods to upload a single file to a SharePoint library

SharePoint Upload File button
  • Use the SharePoint Upload button.
  • Drag a file from the file system on the PC to the library. (The drag and drop method only works with the latest browser versions. If you are using Office 2013 or later, it also works with earlier versions of Internet Explorer. Refer to Microsoft's guidelines.)
  • Save an Office file directly from your PC to a SharePoint library.

All metadata is not kept when you transfer files to SharePoint. Learn what is lost and what you can influence in our article about Metadata Retention.
