Issue Tracking or Tasks list – a comparison
A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström
SharePoint
has two built-in list templates that often can replace each
other: the Tasks list and the Issue Tracking list. There
are however some differences you should be aware of when
you decide which list template to use.
In the demo below Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer
of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, shows the two list
templates and compares them. Here is what he finds:
- If you use the Issue Tracking list template you
cannot synchronize the list with Outlook and Project.
- Only the Tasks list has a timeline.
- The Tasks list has more views than the Issue tracking
list.
- Only the Tasks list item has a 'Show more' link,
but there is no way to decide what should be hidden.
The Issue tracking list item shows all fields.
- Only the Tasks list item has a 'Start Date' field.
- Only the Issue Tracking list item has a 'Category'
dropdown.
- Only the Issue Tracking list item has a Comments
field.
- The 'Predecessors' field in the Tasks list item
has a corresponding 'Related Issues' field in the Issue
Tracking list item.

Peter's recommendation is that you choose the list that
has most of the features you need and then modify it, for
example by adding or deleting columns and creating views.
In the following articles we will give you some tips on
how to enhance the Issue Tracking template, and you can
of course do the same with the Tasks template.
