Create Classic Lists in a Modern Communication Site

SharePoint icon In the demo below, Peter Kalmström, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, shows how to create a classic list in a modern Communication site. By default, this is only possible in Team sites, which normally is the best kind of site to use for tasks collaboration. Sometimes, it might however be convenient to have a list for issue tracking in a Communication site.

The modern Issue tracker list and the classic Issue Tracking list are rather similar, but the classic Tasks list has some specific features that don't exist in other list templates. Therefore, Peter uses the Tasks list as an example in this demo, but with the method he shows, you can create any classic list in a modern Communication site.

The Tasks list will still have the classic interface, but it will work well in the modern Communication environment. (Should you instead create a classic Issue Tracking list, it can have the modern app interface too.)

These are the steps:
  1. In the site settings, open Manage site features in the Site actions group.
  2. Activate the Team Collaboratin Lists feature

  3. Create a new app.
  4. Click on the "classic experience" link.
  5. Search for and click on the list template you want to create.
  6. Give the list a name and click on Create.
  7. Find the new list in the Site content and start using it.
