Excel Automation, Introduction

An Excel tutorial by Peter Kalmström

The Office Scripts automation features are currently available for Excel Online as well as for newer Windows and Mac versions of Excel. They are written in the object-oriented programming language TypeScript, which is a superset of JavaScript. TypeScript runs inside Excel itself and is considered very secure.

With the Automate tools, you can create scripts that automate repetitive tasks, either from scratch or by recording. The scripts can be added to the workbook with or without a button.

You can also combine the Excel automation with other applications, for example by adding the Excel action "Run script" to a Power Automate flow.

To use Office Scripts, you must have a commercial (E3/E5) or Education Microsoft 365 subscription and a stable internet connection. Windows users also need to have Microsoft Edge WebView2 installed.

By deafult, Office Scripts are stored in the creator's OneDrive. Remember that Excel recognizes and runs a script only if it’s located in there or in a SharePoint folder, or if it is shared with the workbook.

All scripts that are available for a workbook can be reached via the "All Scripts" command. Microsoft also supplies multiple sample scripts.

We intend to publish a series of Tips-articles with demos on how the Excel Automate feature can be used. Several articles have downloadable scripts. For some articles, we also supply downloadable Excel files, but you cannot see or run the scripts in these files, as they have not been shared with you.

These are the articles published so far:
