Create New Search Verticals in the Search Center

A SharePoint Online tutorial by Peter Kalmström

SharePoint iconIn the previous article Peter Kalmstrom, CEO and Systems Designer of kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, explained how to create Announcement apps for three site collections and display them all on one page for a central news distribution.

In this article we will show another way to find news information – to create a search vertical that only displays News search results in the Search Center. We will also explain how to create a similar vertical that shows Contacts,
but here the results will be shown in a Content Search web part.

Search verticals are common in search engines, as they give users a possibility to only see hits of a specified type. Google has five search verticals displayed and three more under 'More'.

Google Search Verticals

SharePoint Online has four default search verticals in the Search Center: Everything, People, Conversations and Videos, and you can add your own search vertical with a few steps. Reach the Search Center by searching for Everything, People or Conversations in the global search field.

In the first demo below Peter shows how to create a News vertical and show the result in the default Search Result web part. (A)

In the second demo below Peter creates a Consultants vertical and shows the result in a Content Search web part. (B)

In both cases you have to first create a new page on the Search Center template and at the end add your new vertical to the navigation.

Create a Custom Search Vertical

  • Create a new page.
    1. Open the Search Center.
    2. Under the Settings gear, select Add a page. This creates another page with the Search Results page layout.
    3. Give the page a name and click on Create.
  • Modify the Search Results web part to show Announcements
    1. Edit the web part and click on the 'Change query' button.
    2. Select the query 'Items matching a content type (System)'. Do not restrict by app or tag but restrict to the content type Announcements. Click OK.
    3. Make other preferred settings to the web part and click on Apply.
    4. Publish the page.
  • Show Contacts search results in a Content Search web part
    1. Delete the Search Results web part
    2. Click on the link Add a Web Part and select the Content Rollup category and the Content Search web part. Click on Add.
    3. Drag the Content Search web part to the bottom of the page.
    4. Click on the 'Change query' button.
    5. Select the query 'Items matching a content type (System)'. Do not restrict by tag but restrict to the content type Contacts and the app to a contacts list URL. Click OK.
    6. Do the Property Mappings, to decide how the information should be shown in the Search Results web part.
    7. Make other preferred settings to the web part and click on Apply.
    8. Publish the page.
  • Add the search vertical to the navigation
    1. Under the Settings gear, select Site settings.
    2. Click on the 'Search settings' link in the Search group
    3. At Configure Search Navigation, click on 'Add Link'.
    4. Enter a title and browse to the new search page you just created. Click OK.
    5. (Make sure the new vertical will be displayed among the first and not under the ellipsis, by changing the order or remove an existing vertical.) Click OK.
